An open pink Mountain Laurel bloom with unopened buds and green leaves

Flowers & Snakes

A recent camping trip to a National Forest area west of Douthat State Park took us up to Bald Knob on one of the prettiest trails I’ve ever hiked – along a creek and through several kinds of terrain, including a recovering burn area that was packed with wild azalea and many birds. This trail eventually led to the Warm Springs Mountain Preserve, and a windy ridge with an old fire tower. Also we hiked over into Douthat to the Tuscarora Overlook trail where an old CCC cabin (evidently used for historical demos judging by the tools near the door and the kitchen implements at the hearth) had attracted some scaly residents. Here’s a link to my Flickr album where you can see a few short videos of these fellow travelers.
